Storm nightmare

Our neighborhood has been without power since Tuesday night, when some ferocious thunderstorms made their way through Northern New Jersey. Since then, we’ve become gypsies, trying to save our cold food by porting it from our house to the “in-laws” house late Tuesday night. Then, when they lost power (apparently PSE&G deliberately shut off power on that grid so crews could do tree cleanup and repair the lines), I brought our stuff over to my dad’s house on the other side of town. I’d just done my grocery shopping earlier that day and I sure as hell wasn’t going to lose the meat and shrimp, at the very least.

While we were thankful that neither of our cars or property were damaged, my in-laws’ yard looked like an ancient forest. Luckily, most of the tree branches that fell hit the ground and not the house, except for a few punctures to the siding and the loss of a railing off one of the deck’s staircases.

There were many people who sustained far worse damage to their homes, and many who lost all of their refrigerated foods. News 12 even showed a “river of milk” coming from a Dumpster outside of the Nutley ShopRite, where workers were tossing all sorts of spoiled foods by Tuesday afternoon.

I hear we may have power now, but I won’t believe it until I see it!
