Checking account: open

We finally got around to opening that joint checking account (we already have joint savings). I dragged Mr. Saver to the bank on Saturday morning, much to his lazy-weekend chagrin. I’m still in the process of changing my name, so we only got our six starter checks, but that’s plenty since I pay nost of our bills online. Anyway, Mr. Saver wants to choose the design of the checks — his last checks were Marvel superheroes, how embarassing. We also have to change our direct deposits through our workplaces. Not looking forward to that.

The interest is minimal (.50%), but most banks don’t even offer interest-bearing free checking accounts, so I’m psyched. However, we did forget to ask to apply for debit MasterCards for the account. Right now, we have a simple ATM card that was associated with the savings account. Totally want the debit card, though, so we’ll have to go back. I can’t live without it. I use it for my gas, drugstore and grocery shopping expenses.

During the process of opening the checking account, Mr. Saver had an epiphany, and it went something like this: “You mean I never have to pay a bill again?” Guess who’s totally in charge of the finances now!
