WordPress in the House, and Storm Update

I spent a good portion of Saturday night moving Rainy-Day Saver over to WordPress (finally!). Goodbye, Blogger. You were easy to work with, but had your limitations. It was a crash course in everything — changing feeds and permalinks, and learning some CSS on the fly.

Now, I’m on the hunt for a more permanent theme that mimics my last redesign, which I did just two short weeks ago. Poor planning on my part? You bet. But Budgets Are Sexy‘s move to WordPress this same weekend, along with Financial Samurai‘s note that Blogger doesn’t support trackbacks, spurred me to sponanteity. Again, please bear with me as I work out the kinks. If you come across any problems, please let me know by emailing me at rainydaysaver[at]gmail.com. And yet, I know the nav bar on top is ugly and has the strangest categories. I’m working on it!

Battered by Another Storm
It’s been a crazy weekend, thanks to a nor’easter that ripped through the NYC metro area. Our little town was whipped by near-hurricane-force wind gusts, bringing down another bunch of trees in our neighborhood and cutting power to many people in the area.

Unfortunately, we had some of our ugly mint-green aluminum siding ripped from the side of the house, leaving the framing exposed. Mr. Saver and dad-in-law will be putting up the rogue pieces later today while I’m at work. It may not look pretty, but at least it didn’t happen in the front of the house. It’s not enough damage to bother filing a claim with the insurance company — we have a $1,000 deductible. Anyway, where would we find more of said ugly mint-green aluminum siding in this millennium?

  • Rainy: Check my blog – I’m using Atahualpa and both sidebars are on the right. I started with one sidebar on each side, then moved to both on the right not too long ago. Best of all, it’s free! 🙂

Sorry, got your blog confused with another one. Silly me! I downloaded Atahualpa and see how customizable it is — might give it a try this weekend (if my poor readers can stand another redesign this month, haha).

  • Nice job with the conversion! Exciting isn’t it, you are now in control of your own blog! You broke the shackles that blogger hand on you!

Actually blogger isn’t that bad, but I like the freedom you have with wordpress!

  • I’m in NJ like you and that was one crazy storm. We escaped without serious damage (though I spent most of Sunday with the shop-vac in the basement). There were a lot of trees down in the neighborhood and I was pretty scared the one in front of my house was coming down.

I’m using Thesis and I’m really happy with it. I am so NOT a techie and I don’t know php either but I’ve got it looking pretty good (I think), and you can customize it any way you want. Be sure to download the Openhook plugin. It’s free and it lets you easily add things that would otherwise require coding skills.

  • Moving to WordPress was one of the best things I did! Blogger was a nice place to start but light years from WP.

I’m on Thesis and love it. It doesn’t do everything (won’t make me grilled cheese, for instance) but it pretty flexible and there is a lot of support out there for it).

And yeah, that was a fun storm wasn’t it?

@Forest: Thanks — I don’t think I saved a screenshot, but I’d like something with a cleaner, simpler navigation bar that goes UNDER the header graphic. Still looking! 🙂

@Little House: I don’t think I know enough about CSS & php yet to make Thesis worth it at this point in time. Maybe in the future…

@Lencib: I know, I had problems commenting on WP blogs when I was on Blogger, so I feel your pain.

@Mrs. Accountability: Thanks for the recommendation — I’m partial to both sidebars being on the right for some reason, but I’ll check it out!

  • Congratulations on your move to WordPress! I was VERY happy when I took the plunge! My favorite theme is Atahualpa, it’s free, mature and there are over 200 customizations. I use a lot of plug-ins and widgets that work great with it. You can check out my list of plug-ins (if you’re curious) on my About / Blog Stats page. I have another blog and spent too much time trying to find a theme and finally settled on Atahualpa for the second one. It was just so much easier to work with. I’ve even had an opportunity to use Thesis but prefer Atahualpa. When you figure out exactly what trackbacks are… and how they work, would you let me know? 🙂

  • Welcome to wordpress! It will make posting easier for me, lol.

  • Everyone swears by the Thesis theme. I haven’t tried it myself, but supposedly it’s really flexible. You might want to give it a try.

Good luck on the migration! (you’re so brave 🙂 )

And I hope those storms ease up sometime soon.

  • Awesome work on the blogger–>wordpresss move, looks nice like this. I don’t fully remember the old theme but if you put up a screenshot somewhere ill let you know if I know of any close themes.

Sorry to hear about the storm, really is a pain in the butt!
